After I had the idea of using tree rings (by taking rubbings) I decided to do a vector one first whilst I wait for the tree stump to arrive! Below are some test pieces to see how the pattern could work on the plate. I also need to consider mugs and bowls.

I then tried adding colour (rural palette) and shading to the rings. Personally I still prefer the plain black and white ones, however the is something interesting about the greyscale. 
Try a different shape as I feel I should do more than one pattern for each theme.
Trying a fossil idea out, it doesn't look right however I still like the idea so will maybe try again but with some fossils - make it more like a stone is cut in half.

Overall I think the top tree rings are working and I think they can be developed quickly. I also think the idea of cutting a stone in half (fossils) could be a good match for it - natural objects cut in half and recorded.
